How To Get Rid of Brain Fog

Many people have experienced those days when the mind feels sluggish and simple daily tasks feel like more of an effort than they usually do. Brain fog isn’t a formal medical diagnosis, but it’s real for some, and getting rid of it may take a well-thought-out strategy.

In this guide, we look at what brain fog is, how it manifests itself in various people, why you might be suffering from it, and we reveal a few proven tactics for reducing it. In addition, we’ll present NAD+ supplementation as a way to not just survive but thrive in an ever-demanding world.

What is Brain Fog?

Brain fog refers to a change in normal cognitive processing. It can feel different from person to person, but general symptoms include:

  • Poor concentration
  • Short-term memory lapse
  • Mental fatigue
  • Finding it hard to say the right words
  • Slower processing

Occasional cognitive slumps are normal, but persistent or worsening symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out underlying issues.

What Can Cause Brain Fog?

There isn’t a single reason why brain fog happens. The brain is a powerful organ that takes up around 20% of the body’s total energy. Even minor disruptions in your systemic health can impact it.

However, research suggests that lifestyle factors, including stress, poor sleep, dehydration and nutritional gaps, can lead to a lack of energy and focus. Underlying health conditions, post-viral recovery, hormonal shifts, medication effects and micro-inflammation can all have a direct impact on our cognitive health.

The Habits Quietly Feeding Your Brain Fog

It’s way too easy to get caught up in thinking about what we should be adding to our daily routine and overlooking the things that are probably holding us back. Take caffeine, for example. Having that third or fourth cup of coffee at 4 p.m. may feel like a lifesaver at the time, but the reality is that its effects are going to be lingering in your system come bedtime, because of its half-life of around five hours. And that results in a poor night’s sleep, which just makes you feel even more tired the next morning, exactly the opposite of what you were hoping for.

Missing out on a meal or relying on sugary foods can also have the same effect on you. A pastry and coffee for breakfast, then followed by nothing until late lunch, can send your blood sugar spiking only to fall shortly after, bringing with it a noticeable dip in focus and energy.

Switching back and forth between tasks doesn’t help us much either. Bouncing back and forth from emails to messages to whatever other tab is open and then back again is just enough to keep your brain from ever really getting into anything. By the end of the day, that pattern of little distractions can leave you feeling drained and unfocused, even if each task on its own didn’t feel that challenging.

How to Get Rid of Brain Fog

To overcome brain fog, you need to address your lifestyle choices in order to give your nervous system the support it needs. It’s less about making a big change overnight and instead about small and sustained changes that you can make over time.

Prioritise Getting High-Quality Sleep

Aim for 7 to 9 hours of restorative sleep every night. Other tips include keeping your bedroom cool, dark and quiet and establishing a consistent bedtime routine. Try to avoid screens for at least an hour before bed, as the blue light can reduce melatonin production and make it harder to relax.

Maintain Consistent Hydration and Balanced Nutrition

It might be a good idea to start each day with a large glass of water as well as keeping a bottle close by throughout the day. Keep a food diary and try to lean towards more balanced meals containing complex carbohydrates, lean proteins and healthy fats to prevent sharp spikes and crashes in blood sugar, which can contribute to brain fog.

Take Up a Physical Activity You Can Be Consistent With

Moderate exercise stimulates the release of brain-derived hormones that support memory formation, neuron survival and connections between synapses. For adults, the NHS advises at least 150 minutes of activity per week.

Manage Your Stress Levels and Take Time for Yourself

Continued focus without any rest can lead to cognitive exhaustion. We’re seeing this with the rise of optimisation culture, leading people to burn out.

It’s important to prioritise what our bodies need. For example, a small shift, such as having a structured working day that follows a working period of 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break, consistently, can help us to reset and refresh. Mindfulness, deep breathing and time outdoors can also lower sympathetic nervous system activity and reduce mental strain.

Can Your Diet Affect Brain Fog?

Nutrition is incredibly important to our cognitive wellbeing. But rather than looking for individual superfoods to cure brain fog, it’s best to focus on overall dietary patterns and habits.

A balanced diet rich in whole and unprocessed foods is best for long-term brain health. This includes fibre-rich plant foods, essential fatty acids and antioxidant options such as berries, greens and nuts.

Brain Fog and NAD+

Your brain requires a huge amount of energy at a cellular level to maintain focus, process information and protect itself from stress. One molecule essential for this is  Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+). NAD+ is found in every living cell and plays an important role in fuelling mitochondrial powerhouses, modulating inflammation and activating sirtuin enzymes. Put simply, the brain needs NAD+ to work as efficiently as possible.

However, as we age, or during periods of stress, natural levels of NAD+ decline. This is why many people choose to support their body with NAD+ supplementation. That said, it’s best suited for general metabolic efficiency and cellular vitality rather than a one-stop solution for brain fog.

When Should You Speak To a Doctor?

Occasional brain fog can be very normal and is often resolved with getting better sleep, stress management and focusing on your nutrition. But persistent or worsening symptoms should never be ignored, so if you do experience the following, you should book an appointment with your GP:

  • Persistent symptoms for several weeks despite making healthy lifestyle changes.
  • Unexplainable fatigue, muscle weakness, weight changes or joint pain.
  • Interferes significantly with your ability to perform your job or manage daily life safely.
  • Sudden or acute neurological symptoms, including sudden confusion, difficulty speaking, facial drooping, numbness, severe weakness or a sudden headache, require immediate medical attention.

NAD+ Supplementation and Brain Fog

If you’re struggling with brain fog and it’s beginning to affect your daily life, just know you don’t need to wait until it gets any worse. There are things you can do to improve the way you feel physically and mentally, and there are opportunities for you to regain control of your life.

Reclaiming your focus and zest for life doesn’t happen overnight. But small and consistent actions quickly add up. By putting your body’s needs first, prioritising rest, and supporting your health from the inside out, you’ll gradually gain the mental clarity you need to thrive.

While sleep, nutrition and exercise have all been suggested to help with brain fog, NAD+ supplementation can also support long-term vitality, energy and focus. That’s where we come in at NAD+ At Home with safe and easy solutions that you can administer from the comfort of your own home.
